Renting a Car Abroad with Kids: Car Seats and Practical Tips
Road-tripping is by far our favourite way to travel as a family: it guarantees maximum freedom with timing, flexible stops, and the ability to work around the kids’ pace without the stress of public transport. However, renting a car abroad with children in tow requires some specific attention to car seats, vehicle categories and insurance cover to avoid unpleasant surprises at the rental counter.

1. The Car Seat Dilemma: Rent It or Bring Your Own?
This is one of the most common questions for parents about to depart. Both options have pros and cons depending on the type of trip:
✈️ Bringing your own car seat
- Pros:It’s free (almost all airlines let you check 1 or 2 pieces of children’s equipment for free, including car seats), and it’s clean and safe because you already know how to fit it.
- Cons:Bulky during airport transfers and risk of damage in the hold (always use a padded, protective travel bag).
🚗 Renting it from the company
- Pros:No bulk during flights and transfers on foot.
- Cons:Daily costs can be high (often over €10-15/day with a cap); the cleanliness or wear of the provided seat isn’t always guaranteed.
💡 The alternative for older kids (age 4+):Consider a lightweight, approved travel booster seatthat fits directly in your hand luggage. It takes up very little space and solves the problem on arrival.
2. Choosing the Right Car Category for Your Luggage
When travelling with children, boot space is never enough. Strollers, backpacks, suitcases and changing bags quickly fill all available volume:
- Don’t underestimate rear car seats:An infant or toddler car seat takes up a lot of depth. On Economy-category cars (small hatchbacks), the front passenger seat may need to move forward too much, reducing legroom for the adult.
- Go for compact SUVs or crossovers:They offer a comfortable ride height for loading/unloading kids from car seats without straining your back, and a regular, roomy boot.
- Check the number of hard suitcases:If you’re a family of 4 with two large suitcases plus a stroller, aim for at least a Compact or Intermediate/Midsize category.

3. Insurance and Credit Cards: What to Know Before Booking
Peace of mind on a family trip is priceless, especially when covering hundreds of kilometres in a foreign country:
- Full/zero-excess insurance:Always include full cover for damage, theft, windscreens and tyres. With kids on board, avoiding the stress of a small parking-lot scratch or a stone chip on the windscreen makes for a very different trip.
- Main driver’s credit card:Make sure you have a physical credit card (embossed numbers, not debit or prepaid) in the main driver’s name with enough available credit for the deposit required at the counter.
- Free additional driver:Many rentals include an additional driver in the price, or for spouses. Sharing the driving on long transfers avoids accumulated fatigue.

4. Road Rules and International Driving Permits
Before getting behind the wheel outside the EU, carefully check the destination country’s regulatory requirements:
- International Driving Permit:For many non-EU destinations (e.g. Japan, some US states, Australia) an International Driving Permit (1949 Geneva Convention or 1968 Vienna Convention model) is required or strongly recommended. Apply at your local licensing office a few weeks ahead.
- Local car seat regulations:Make sure the country’s rules match your children’s age/height bracket (for example, the US uses LATCH approval standards different from European ISOFIX, though most modern travel car seats are widely accepted).
